Moccamaster KBG Select Review: Is It Really Worth the Money?

People who want consistently excellent filter coffee from a beautifully simple machine.

The Moccamaster KBG Select looks almost suspiciously simple for an expensive filter coffee machine.

There isn't a touchscreen.

There isn't an app.

There isn't a built-in grinder.

There aren't 20 coffee recipes.

Instead, Technivorm has spent decades refining essentially the same idea:

heat water properly and distribute it over ground coffee reliably.

That's why Moccamaster has developed such a loyal following.

The KBG Select isn't trying to automate your entire coffee routine.

It's trying to brew a very good pot of filter coffee consistently, quickly and for a very long time.

If that's what you want, it's excellent.

If you're expecting hundreds of pounds' worth of visible technology, you may wonder what all the fuss is about.

What Is the Moccamaster KBG Select?

KBG Select is an electric filter coffee brewer from Dutch manufacturer Technivorm.

The concept is straightforward.

Put a paper filter into the basket.

Add ground coffee.

Fill the water tank.

Switch the machine on.

Hot water passes through the grounds and brewed coffee flows into the glass carafe.

That's it.

The engineering behind that simple process is why people pay a premium.

Brewing Temperature

Filter coffee is highly sensitive to water temperature.

Water that's too cool can produce weak, sour and under-extracted coffee.

Water that's excessively hot can contribute to harshness.

Moccamaster machines are engineered around an appropriate brewing-temperature range rather than relying on underpowered heating elements.

That's one of the core reasons enthusiasts like them.

Copper Heating Element

Moccamaster uses a copper boiling element to heat water rapidly.

This helps the machine reach brewing temperature quickly and maintain effective water delivery during the brew.

It's one of the key differences between a premium filter brewer and many inexpensive supermarket machines.

Coffee Quality

Excellent.

But there's an important caveat.

KBG Select doesn't contain a grinder.

So if you fill it with stale supermarket coffee ground six months ago, don't expect miracles.

For the best results use:

  • fresh beans;
  • good grinder;
  • appropriate filter grind;
  • sensible coffee-to-water ratio;
  • decent water.

The brewer can then do its job properly.

Full Pot and Half Pot

The Select part of KBG Select refers to its brewing selector.

You can optimise brewing for:

  • full carafe;
  • half carafe.

That's useful because brewing a smaller amount of filter coffee isn't simply the same process with less water.

The machine adjusts its behaviour to maintain more appropriate extraction.

How Much Coffee Does It Make?

The water reservoir holds around 1.25 litres, corresponding to approximately ten European-style cups.

Remember:

Coffee-machine “cups” are not necessarily enormous British mugs.

If you're filling giant mugs, expect fewer servings.

Brewing Speed

A full pot is brewed surprisingly quickly.

That's useful in the morning and particularly valuable when several people want coffee simultaneously.

A filter machine can make far more sense for a household of black-coffee drinkers than repeatedly producing individual Americanos from an espresso machine.

Hotplate

KBG Select uses a glass carafe positioned over a hotplate.

This keeps coffee warm after brewing.

However, we'd still recommend drinking filter coffee reasonably fresh.

Leaving brewed coffee cooking on a hotplate for hours doesn't improve it.

If long-term heat retention matters, consider a thermal-carafe machine instead.

Moccamaster KBG Select vs Sage Precision Brewer

This is probably the most important premium filter comparison.

  • consistently excellent standard filter brewing.

Sage Precision Brewer

Moccamaster vs Melitta AromaFresh

AromaFresh includes a grinder.

Moccamaster doesn't.

That gives Melitta enormous convenience:

beans in → fresh filter coffee out.

But Moccamaster allows you to choose a much better separate grinder and focuses heavily on brewing quality and construction.

If convenience matters, AromaFresh.

If the brewer itself is your priority, KBG Select.

Moccamaster vs Bean-to-Cup

These machines solve different problems.

A bean-to-cup makes individual espresso-based drinks.

Moccamaster makes a pot of filter coffee.

For a household drinking several mugs of black coffee every morning, filter brewing can be:

  • quicker;
  • simpler;
  • cheaper;
  • better suited to the quantity required.

Don't assume espresso-based machines are automatically the premium option.

Excellent filter coffee is a different drink.

Cleaning

Maintenance is straightforward.

Regularly clean:

  • carafe;
  • filter basket;
  • shower outlet components;
  • water reservoir exterior;
  • hotplate.

The machine also requires periodic descaling.

Because there are no:

  • grinders;
  • milk systems;
  • internal coffee pucks;

maintenance is far easier than with a bean-to-cup machine.

Repairability

One of the strongest arguments for Moccamaster is its long-term ownership philosophy.

The design uses individual components that can be replaced rather than treating the entire machine as disposable.

That's particularly important at this price.

A premium machine makes more sense when it's built with long service life in mind.

Who Should Buy Moccamaster KBG Select?

Buy it if:

  • filter coffee is your main drink;
  • coffee quality matters;
  • you own a good grinder;
  • you value simple equipment;
  • longevity matters;
  • you regularly make several cups.

Who Shouldn't Buy It?

Look elsewhere if:

  • you want espresso;
  • you want milk drinks;
  • you need a built-in grinder;
  • you want a programmable timer;
  • you want lots of brewing modes.

Is Moccamaster KBG Select Worth It?

Yes — for the right coffee drinker.

You're not paying for features.

You're paying for:

  • brewing;
  • heating;
  • construction;
  • simplicity;
  • longevity.

That makes it harder to sell on a specification table.

But much easier to appreciate after years of use.

Final Verdict

Moccamaster KBG Select is refreshingly focused.

It doesn't pretend your coffee machine needs to be another smart device.

It heats water.

It distributes it over coffee.

It fills a carafe.

And it does those simple things exceptionally well.

Pair it with a good grinder and fresh beans and KBG Select can produce superb filter coffee with almost no effort.
