Ninja Luxe Café Premier Review: The Best Coffee Machine for Beginners?

Beginners who want to make café-style coffee rather than press one automatic button.

The Ninja Luxe Café Premier is difficult to put into a conventional coffee-machine category.

It isn't bean-to-cup in the traditional sense.

It isn't a normal manual espresso machine either.

Instead, Ninja has combined an espresso machine, built-in grinder, weight-based dosing, assisted tamping, automatic milk frothing, filter coffee and cold brew into one machine — then added technology designed to tell you how to use it.

That last part is what makes the Luxe Café particularly interesting.

Rather than completely automating the coffee like a De’Longhi Rivelia, Ninja lets you make it while helping you avoid many of the mistakes beginners make.

For someone who wants the home-barista experience without the home-barista frustration, it's an extremely compelling package.

What Is the Ninja Luxe Café?

The easiest way to understand it is as an assisted home-barista machine.

You still use a portafilter.

You still grind coffee into it.

You still tamp the coffee.

And you still lock the portafilter into the group head.

But the machine helps with many of the decisions.

Ninja's Barista Assist system recommends a grind size and uses an integrated scale for weight-based dosing. It can then adapt its recommendation based on previous espresso extractions.

Instead of simply telling a beginner:

“Here's an espresso machine. Good luck.”

the Ninja tries to guide them through the process.

What Does the Ninja Luxe Café Make?

The Premier is unusually versatile.

It combines three major brewing styles:

Espresso

Including traditional espresso and larger espresso options.

Filter Coffee

You can make larger coffee-style drinks rather than simply watering down espresso.

Cold Coffee

Cold-pressed espresso and cold brew functionality give it considerably more flexibility than a conventional espresso machine.

There are also multiple drink sizes, extending up to large mug-sized servings.

This means the Ninja makes particular sense in households where one person wants espresso while somebody else wants a large coffee.

Barista Assist: Does It Actually Matter?

Yes.

It's arguably the machine's most important feature.

One of the hardest things about buying your first espresso setup is dialling in the grinder.

Change beans and suddenly the grind that worked yesterday may no longer produce the extraction you want.

Ninja attempts to reduce that guesswork.

The grinder has 25 settings, and Barista Assist recommends where the grinder should be set.

It can adjust its recommendation based on previous extractions and changes in the coffee.

You'll still physically turn the grind dial.

But you're no longer guessing blindly.

For a beginner, that's enormously useful.

Built-In Grinder and Scale

The integrated conical burr grinder has 25 grind settings.

More importantly, Ninja combines it with a built-in scale.

That means dosing is based on weight rather than simply running the grinder for a fixed amount of time.

This is exactly the sort of feature we'd rather see than another ten meaningless drink icons.

Consistency starts with putting the right amount of coffee in the basket.

The Ninja actively helps you do that.

Assisted Tamping

The Premier uses an assisted tamper.

It's important not to confuse this with the more automated tamping system on higher Luxe Café models.

You still perform the tamp.

Ninja provides the equipment and guidance to make the process easier and more consistent.

This retains some of the barista experience while removing the need to immediately buy a collection of aftermarket accessories.

Espresso Quality

The Ninja's real advantage isn't that it magically makes better espresso than every manual machine.

It's that it helps inexperienced users get into the right territory faster.

Good espresso depends on:

  • fresh coffee;
  • appropriate grind;
  • correct dose;
  • reasonably even puck preparation;
  • appropriate extraction.

The grinder recommendation and weight-based dosing help control two major variables before you've even started brewing.

With decent fresh beans, that gives beginners a much stronger starting point than an entirely manual setup.

Filter Coffee

This is a major differentiator.

Most espresso machines make espresso.

That's hardly surprising.

Ninja can also brew larger filter-style coffee drinks.

That makes it particularly useful for households where people have completely different coffee preferences.

Instead of owning:

espresso machine + grinder + filter machine

the Luxe Café attempts to cover all three roles.

If you never drink filter coffee, this matters less.

If you do, it's a significant advantage.

Cold Brew and Iced Coffee

Cold coffee isn't an afterthought here.

The Premier supports cold brew and cold-pressed espresso-style preparation alongside drinks intended to be served over ice.

That makes the machine considerably more versatile through summer than a conventional espresso-only setup.

If iced latte and cold coffee are part of your routine, Ninja deserves serious consideration.

Milk Frothing

The Dual Froth System automatically steams and whisks the milk.

There are four presets:

  • Steamed Milk
  • Thin Froth
  • Thick Froth
  • Cold Foam

The system can be used with dairy and plant-based milk.

This is another reason we rate the machine so highly for beginners.

Milk steaming is a skill in itself.

Ninja lets you concentrate on preparing the coffee while automating much of the milk work.

Is It Good for Latte?

Very.

Choose the appropriate milk setting and the machine handles the texturing.

You then pour the milk yourself.

That gives you more involvement than a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine without requiring you to manually control a steam wand.

Read guide

Is It Good for Flat White?

This is arguably where the Ninja concept becomes even more attractive.

Flat white needs decent espresso and finer milk texture.

The combination of assisted espresso preparation and thinner automatic froth makes it a strong choice for someone wanting to improve their flat whites without immediately mastering manual steaming.

Ease of Use

There's an interesting contradiction here.

The Ninja has lots of controls and functions.

But it's actually designed to make complicated coffee easier.

Once you understand the workflow:

select drink → follow grind recommendation → grind → tamp → brew → froth

it becomes logical.

It's more work than Rivelia.

It's substantially less guesswork than a traditional espresso setup.

Size

This isn't a tiny machine.

The Premier measures approximately:

33.6cm wide × 34.4cm deep × 37.2cm high

and weighs around 17kg.

That's the price of integrating:

  • grinder;
  • scale;
  • espresso brewing;
  • filter brewing;
  • milk system;
  • storage.

Measure your worktop before buying.

Cleaning

The machine includes automated cleaning and purge functionality, while several removable components are designed for easier cleaning.

You'll still need to deal with:

  • coffee grounds;
  • portafilter;
  • baskets;
  • milk jug;
  • steam wand;
  • drip tray;
  • grinder;
  • periodic descaling.

It's more hands-on than bean-to-cup.

But that's partly because you're actually participating in coffee preparation.

Ninja Luxe Café vs Sage Barista Express Impress

This is one of the comparisons we'd make first.

Ninja

Better for:

  • beginners;
  • filter coffee;
  • cold coffee;
  • automatic milk;
  • greater guidance;
  • households with varied drink preferences.

Sage

Better for:

  • more traditional espresso experience;
  • manual milk steaming;
  • developing barista skills;
  • people primarily interested in espresso.

The Ninja is the more versatile appliance.

The Sage is the more traditional espresso proposition.

Ninja Luxe Café Premier vs Pro

Ninja now has several Luxe Café models.

The Premier shouldn't automatically be dismissed because a Pro exists.

The Premier already includes:

  • 25 grind settings;
  • weight-based dosing;
  • Barista Assist;
  • automatic milk;
  • espresso;
  • filter;
  • cold coffee.

The Pro adds further functionality including a more integrated tamping approach and expanded drink options.

The question is whether you'll actually use those additions.

Who Should Buy the Ninja Luxe Café?

Buy it if:

  • this is your first serious coffee machine;
  • you want to learn;
  • you drink both espresso and larger coffees;
  • you like iced coffee;
  • you want automatic milk assistance;
  • you don't want a separate grinder;
  • you want guidance rather than complete automation.

Who Shouldn't Buy It?

Look elsewhere if:

  • you want one-touch coffee;
  • you want the smallest possible machine;
  • you already own an excellent grinder;
  • you want a completely manual espresso setup;
  • you only drink one simple black coffee.

Final Verdict

Ninja has approached home espresso from an unusually sensible direction.

Instead of asking how much more it can automate, it asks:

Which parts do beginners actually need help with?

Grind size?

It recommends one.

Dose?

There's a scale.

Milk?

It can automate it.

But you still handle the portafilter and actually make the drink.

That's why the Luxe Café Premier is one of our favourite machines for someone wanting to move beyond pods or automatic coffee without immediately disappearing down the espresso rabbit hole.
